New Conservative attack ads. Conservatives Values? - 2007-01-29

This weekend Steve Harper's conservative party released three attack ads attacking Liberal leader Stephan Dion in American style election attack ads. Apparently, the conservatives know they can't increase popularity by touting their own "successes" so they must rely on trying to degrade their opposition with, out of context video clips and inaccurate accusations.

The Conservatives are quite happily denouncing Mr. Dion's record as environment minister and complaining that greenhouse gas emissions increased during the 13-year rein of the Liberal government.

They omit the fact Mr. Dion was only the environment minister for 18 months, and that during those 18 months, Steve and the boys did everything possible to delay and obstruct any progress on controlling greenhouse gases by taking their lead from the George W. Bush administration's belief that greenhouse gases were a myth propagated by the "tree huggers" of the world.

They also omit the fact that Mr. Dion was the environment minister during the short Liberal minority government which had its hands full dealing with the scandal created by a handful of dishonest, unelected, liberal supporters. I'm actually surprised Paul Matin's government got anything done during that period with constantly having to be on the defensive over the actions taken by that handful of people during a previous government's reign.

Personally, I hate attack ads by any party during an election and would be in complete agreement with enacting a law to ban them across the board. To air attack ads while at the same time saying that the government is trying to work with the other parties to get things done is absurd. To air attack ads when there isn't an election in progress is disgusting.

Attack ads are an action of a weak, insecure and ignorant entity. The conservatives have enacted largely unimportant and ineffective legislation in this past year and have nothing to be proud of in their policies, performance or behaviour that will aid in their lust for power, so they are restricted to denigrating their opposition in an effort to undermine them.

The old adage "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" should be law. I'm sick of hearing conservatives answer every question of them with what others didn't or did do. If they truly had any integrity they would stand on their own beliefs and values.
